Guest Blogger - Frenchknots - Halloween Paint Can Vase

Hello Crafty Friends! I am thrilled to be guest posting while Michelle is enjoying some R & R with her family. Oh, Wow! let me introduce myself: I am Pamela, I blog at

about quilting, crafting and the yummy things I make in my kitchen. I am lucky enough to live in Utah with my three sons and my creative husband. Right now we are enjoying the most beautiful indian summer; the leaves are about to change and fall harvest is at its peak. Oh, my heck! what's not to love?!?

I wanted to share an easy and dirt cheap Halloween craft. Once you see how easy it is you'll be raiding your neighbor's garages to make more. I know, I've done it!! (Crap, that was a secret) I digress; let's make a :

Halloween Paint Can

Who doesn't have a few of these laying around?!?

Step 1: Find a almost empty paint can. Clean out remaining paint and remove wrapper.

Step 2: Paint Can. I did 3 light coats of paint, letting each dry before applying the next coat. It was a warm afternoon so each coat only needed about 15 mins. Don't forget the inside too!

Step 3: Pick an image. I used an old Susan Branch Calendar. I love her illustrations, and this little vignette of children trick or treating was perfect.

Step 4: Mod Podge the image onto the paint can.

Step 5: Stain over the entire can, image and all to get that fun, aged look.

Step 6: Fill with something festive and enjoy.

Every year I put out my Halloween Cans and fill them with different things: fresh flowers, fake flowers, candy, dollar store decor etc. In the past, I've filled the can with something special and given them away to neighbors, teachers, and friends. This year, I think I'll be giving away cinnamon swirl bread, the opening looks just big enough.

I'd love for you to stop by
Frenchknots and say hello. You'll find lots of quilty and crafty goodness. Check out this quilt top I recently finished ~ I am so in love with it! Once you've made the Halloween Paint Can check out these other super cute Halloween crafts: Polka Dot Pumpkins and a Halloween Countdown Calendar for your little trick or treaters.

XOXO, Michelle. Someday Crafts is the best!

THANKS, Pamela! I love it when a person turns garbage and junk into something adorable. These paint cans look so cute with the fun prints and flowers! What a great display for fall and Halloween. Visit French Knots today!

You are not going to believe this one either! This beautiful sofa used to be navy blue. Was it reupholstered? Nope! Johnny In A Dress spray painted it. Super cool!

Wednesday Party Highlights

I missed posting some party highlights this week because my computer was not cooperating! Here are a few lovely projects that I would love to see in my house or do!

I want a couple shelves filled with these Restoration Hardware industrial basket knock-offs at my house. I have quite a few shelves that would more stylish with these babies! Blissfully Ever After is the creator of these!

Have the style of Ballard Design without the high cost by building these cafe shelves by yourself. Great tutorial by That Village House.

I'm loving how A Little Tipsy glammed up her builder grade bathroom mirror by adding some frosting around the edges. (That sounds funny!) Pretty, Pretty frosted-edged mirror!

Check out these gorgeous skinny ruffled headbands at Flamingo Toes! So pretty and feminine.

I've never met a kid who didn't like to play in water with their hands. This water wall looks like so much fun! A Family That Birds Together has some happy children because of this contraption!

Guest Blogger - Little b - Photograph Painting

Hello all!

My name is Amanda, author of the blog

little b

I'm a new momma who loves my little family, crafting, and sharing my passions with others. I'm recently new to the blogging world and am having such a wonderful time learning from others and getting to share my new journey through mommahood and my crafting ventures!

I am so thrilled and honored to be guest blogging here at Someday Crafts! Being one of the first blogs I came across when I first was exploring blog world, I jumped at the opportunity to come share one of the things I love creating.

Have you ever had a photo that you would love to see as a painted piece of artwork? Well I'm here to show you how :) For this tutorial I used a black and white photo but if you would like to learn how to do the same thing in color feel free to give me some feedback and I'd love to do a follow up tutorial on my blog!

Here is what you will need:

~ Painting canvas {I used a 9in. x 9in. canvas

~ Your favorite black and white photo

~ A copy of your photo {To fit the size of your canvas and printed onto regular computer paper}

~ A painting tray {If you don't have one a plastic plate or even a piece of tinfoil or wax paper would work!}

~ Various sizes of paint brushes

~ Black and white paint {I used gouache paints}

~ A pencil {softer lead works the best}

~ A ball point pen {you want a pen that will not bleed through paper}

~ A cup of water

~ An eraser

~ Tape

Here is the photo I started with...

First, you want to take the copy of your photo, that you printed on regular paper, and draw a layer of pencil onto the back of it...

Next you want to tape it to your canvas, pencil covered side down {only place a piece of tape on the top of the photo}...

Now you take your pen and outline the various shadows. Outline the darkest part of the shadows first, then the next darkest and so on until all hues of the shadows have been outlined...

Your photo should end up looking something like this {my printer wouldn't print out the photo with out the light lines through it, but those aren't part of the photo}...

Looks a little funny right? To help yourself more when it comes to painting you can number each of these sections to make it easier to match the hue of paint to the section of the shadow {kind of like making your own paint by numbers :)}.

Now you can remove the photo from your canvas and you should be left with faint pencil lines where you outlined your shadows on your photo, looking something like this...

I did not number mine, but I recommend for your first time with this project to help yourself get through it a little quicker :)

Now you get to start painting! Starting with your shadows that are completely black, use your black paint to paint those sections in {use your photo you drew on as your reference, this is where the numbering comes in handy :)}...

Next, move on to the second darkest group of shadows. Add white paint to your black paint to lighten its hue {not a lot of paint is needed to do this}...

Continue repeating the last step for each hue of your shadows until you finish painting your photo.

For the areas that are completely white you can just leave that area blank and not paint it with white {that just takes more time and I think it looks better to utilize the white of the canvas}

Once you finish painting in all of your sections, you can use your original photo as a reference to compare to and add any highlights or lowlights with you paints as you see necessary! You're the artist here :)

And voila!!!

You have transformed your favorite photo into a beautiful work of art!

Want to take it one step further??? You can do this same painting in your favorite color! You can create a monotone photo painting by changing the hue of your favorite color. This is done by adding black to the color to make it darker and white to make it lighter. So follow the same steps, but instead you just use various hues of your color! This is fun if you want to have more than one painting side by side :)

Thank you so much for reading my tutorial! I hope you enjoyed it!

As always I absolutely love seeing your finished products, feel free to send me photos by contacting me here {I'm also happy to take any questions :)}

Come visit me at little b and check out more of my life!!!

Happy painting!

AMANDA, THANK YOU FOR THIS GREAT TUTORIAL!!! I love this idea and see so many possibilities. I love the thought of doing a couple different colored paintings of the same picture to match the color of my daughter's room and hanging them side-by-side! Darling.

Go give a shout out to Amanda at little b.

Summer Kid Activities - Sand Dough, Puffy Paint & Chalk Spray

Hi y'all! I am busy planning my two oldest kids' birthday party. So far, 30 kids have RSVP'd! It's going to be a BIG party!

Since I have "summer kids birthday parties" on my mind this week, I've been looking for fun kid ideas. Here are a couple I've found that I'm not using for their party, but will definitely be doing with my kids!

I love this idea of sand dough found on Hope Studios (originally published by Family Fun Magazine.) She made a mixture made mostly of sand that can be sculpted and will turn hard.

Sand castles and other creations can be made into kids' works of art to display using this sand dough recipe!

Another activity I know my kids will love is getting dirty using puffy paint! Not only is like finger paint, but it is 3-D! Totally cool! Get the puffy paint recipe from Life In The Dub Lane.

Kids love sidewalk chalk. Moms like me don't love how it gets all over their clothes, hands and face! This chalk spray from Infarrantly Creative sounds like a great compromise! I think my kids might actually like chalk spray more since it comes from a spray bottle!!! They love to squirt things.

How To Paint Laminate Furniture!!!!

We all have some laminate bookshelves or furniture in our house that we wish was a different color and had a different look. Well, DIY Kinda Girl shows you how to paint that laminate so you can fall in love with it (instead of just tolerate it)!

Paint Brush Trick! (Great tip for those with yound kids!)

I love this tip from My Life and Kids. She (like me) has to find time to paint in little increments on time due to having young children. I dislike when I just start painting and have to finish quickly because my kids have just gotten into mischief or want my attention!!!! This tip on keeping the paint brush and roller ready to go at any time or putting them away quickly without washing them out is one I am definitely going to try.

Fabulous Party Highlights!

I'm taking a few minutes of my vacation to look at the party links and WOW!!! Here are a few that stood out to me. I will have a few more to show tomorrow!

Is it me or is there something totally stunning about these tree stumps painted white and used a coffee table? Thrifty and Chic pulled off this crazy tree stump tables in her entirely too gorgeous house! I wish I could pull off her style!

There are some drop-dead fabulous paper napkins out there to buy! A Mom Not a Professional or a Perfectionist turned some paper napkins into decor balls! I need some of these!

Breakfast For Dinner took two iron garden/planter baskets and turned them into a gorgeous light fixture. It looks like a million bucks (even though it cost her nothing!)

There is something beautiful about silver! I'm loving these Pottery Barn inspired silver seashells in the bathroom at from Gardners to Bergers. Pretty!

In Too Deep turned some Ikea spice racks into these awesome book shelves. What an easy and functional transformation! Hurry and run to Ikea OR look at the spice racks around you to see if they would work!

Patriotic Milk Glass AND Star Sewn Garland!

Madigan Made has a very simple and yet beautiful display for the upcoming patriotic holiday. She used dollar store star candy dishes and painted them to match her free printable. She also includes some other colored vases.

You've got to check out this milk glass post to see all three projects!

Madigan Made also used some paper stars and a sewing machine to create a quick and adorable Fourth of July garland.
