Guest Blogger - Mailbox Moments - Upcycled Book Box

Upcycled Book Box

Hi! I am Kendra from Mailbox Moments and I am super excited to be sharing a project here at Someday Crafts! Our blog started a few months ago when I moved to Hawaii! You see, my mom and I used to live 5 mins away from each other [in Utah]. We spent lots of time going to lunch, making crafts, talking about blogs, shopping, and checking out bakeries. Now that I live 3,000 miles away, we obviously can't do that anymore so we started a blog where we write letters back and forth sharing a little blog gossip, recipes, diy projects, and bits of life.We hope you will come stop by and say hi!

And now for the craft I want to share with you.....

Supplies You Need:

  • An old hardcover book [check your book shelf, the DI, goodwill, etc.]

  • Exacto Knife

  • Glue [school glue works just great or even glue sticks]

  • A ruler

  • A cute envelope, ribbon, papers clips, etc... that you want to embellish your book with

Step #1: Glue the back cover of the book to the last page.

Step #2: Flip to the first page of the book. Using your ruler, mark the square that you want to be your box. I suggest you make it big enough to fit a note card or envelope, but it is really just up to you!

Step #3: Using the exacto knife, cut along the square that you drew on the first page. You can cut several layers at a time. The first few pages are a little more difficult to cut, because you have to make sure you are cutting straight but once you have cut down a few layers, it is super easy!

Step #4: Continue cutting out the pages of the book to create the depth of your storage box. You can make it as deep or shallow as you want.

Step #5: Once you have cut the storage part as deep as you want, start gluing! It doesn't have to be exact or perfect. Just hold your thumb one on a group of pages [like you are shuffling] and glue each page as you let go slowly.

**It may also work to just use modge podge on the actual sides of the book. I didn't try it, but I think it might be quicker than gluing every page **

Step #7: Embellish! Add an envelope to the front flap, add ribbon, paper clips, whatever you want!

Step #8: Fill your new upcycled keepsake box with letters, notes and cards!

Enjoy! And thanks for reading! Hope to see you at our blog, Mailbox Moments! And feel free to introduce yourself! We love to meet new bloggy friends!

Thanks, Kendra and Mom! I love any projects that involves old books! This one is fabulous! It's fun to see Kendra start this blog with pictures of paradise (Hawaii). I also love Kendra's other blog, Key Lime Digital Design. Visit one or both of her blogs today!

Reader's Wreath

Wreaths made of book pages are so trendy and cool right now. I'm loving this version of a book page wreath made by Squeezing It All In. It definitely would look fabulous in a library or reading nook.

Also, check out the winners to the Crafting For A Cause - Pillowfight contest- at Ladybird Ln! Lucky people who won! Thanks again for everyone who participated in this month charity!

2 Unique Book Ideas!

A Creative Princess made a stylish clock out of 3 books like she had seen in a Redbook magazine! Wouldn't this book clock look so cute on a shelf?

Turn an old book into a perfect spot for a bird nest! Holy Craft created a beautiful mantle with this bird nest book being an intergral part of the display!

These were linked up to the Whatever Goes Wednesday party!

DIY Book Ledges

Don't you love the way that And Then There Was Home displays her childrens' books on these DIY ledges? The kids can see all the titles and pictures and can choose what they want instead of scattering the books all over the floor! Great idea that doesn't cost that much money to implement! What a dreamy reading area!

How To Style A Bookcase/Shelves

I don't know about you, but my bookcases look messy and cluttered and full of....stuff. When I see beautiful bookcases and shelves, I'm a little jealous at their loveliness. All About Vignettes offers some advice and direction about how to make a bookcase look magnificent and shows some great pictures.

Some Party Beauties!

I never could highlight all the beautiful and tasty creations at every party! It's so hard! But here are a few that I love!!!!

Seven Thirty Three made over her master bedroom and it is to die for!!! I'm loving the colors and design. But most of all, I love that beadboard wall headboard! It looks awesome!

I'm loving this ruffle refashioned shirt from See Kate Sew! Darling and super stylish!

Chameleon Girls made this outrageously cool book lamp! Such a great idea for one who loves books (and can part with a few!!!)

What do you do with all those plastic eggs left over from Easter? Especially the ones that have one side broken or lost? Well, you should make a few into these plastic egg tea cups like The Moody Fashionista. Such a fun idea!!!

I want to plant some flowers in some rain boots! I love this spring display from Blueberry Craft and Hobby Time.

4 Reader's Submissions

.
I get a lot of submission for awesome projects. I love it and I hate it. I love it because there is no way I can view all the amazing blogs, ideas and projects out there. I hate it because I can't possibly feature them all and I feel badly about that.
.
Here are a few of the submissions I've received lately.
.
Turn those plastic Easter eggs into beautiful speckled eggs for your spring decor. See how The V-Spot made these faux robin's eggs.

It's not too late to make a Lucky in Love shirt for you or a little one using this idea from My Own Road. Or you can save this idea for next year!

Born Again Crafter created this awesome wreath using old book pages. It only cost her $.45 to make! What a steal. See the book page wreath.

HoneyBear Lane turned an inexpensive store-bought clock into a Crate and Barrel knock-off clock. Love the colors and the big numbers.
